Today Lavington Common is a National Trust property stretching over 77 acres to the south-west of the village of Petworth in West Sussex. However, back in the final years of the 17th century it was the location for a race meeting where the principal race was a £20 Plate in which no horse which had previously contested such a Plate could take part. Horses had to be shown at West Lavington a week before the Plate was contested.
